Nothing turns off a client like seeing your semi-truck pull into the lot caked in dirt. Not only do clean semi-trucks look more professional, but they’re also less vulnerable to corrosion, saving you money on maintenance in the long run. If you’re not sure where to start, this guide from Fyda Freightliner will walk you through the steps of washing your semi-truck.

Cleaning Out Your Trailer

Before you clean the semi-truck itself, take a look at the trailer. Wash the top of the trailer first and work your way down, using only manufacturer-approved cleaning products. Extra components like ramps and shovels will need to be cleaned as well. The trailer’s interior will also need to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, particularly if it will be used to transport goods that require a sterile environment such as medical supplies or food. As an aside, make sure that your trailer has fully dried before you attempt to load it.

Washing the Semi-Truck’s Exterior

Semi-trucks are very large, so cleaning one by hand can take some time. Some owners choose to utilize a mobile truck washing service or automated wash. These services, while faster than hand washing, also tend to be more expensive. If you do decide to wash your semi-truck by hand, start by gathering your tools. These include a hose or pressure washer, buckets, sponges, soft-bristle brushes, a telescoping brush, and a ladder.

Pre-Soak & Treat

Once you have all your supplies together, find a place with easy water access and good drainage so that you can start spraying down your semi-truck. Spray the entirety of the vehicles to loosen up the grime. Certain areas may require the use of a degreaser. Pressure washers are very powerful, so be careful not to damage any of your semi-trucks components if you are using one.

Lather & Rinse

Once you’re done soaking your semi-truck, start cleaning it one side at a time using car soap and water. You may need to use a ladder to get to the hard to reach areas, in which case you;ll need to have someone spot you. Use a soft-bristle brush or a washing mitt to clean detail areas like the headlights, bumper, tires, and doors. Once you’re done scrubbing, give your truck another rinse.

Apply Wax

Next, towel off your semi-truck or allow it to air dry. Once your semi-truck is fully dry, you can apply a protective wax coating. Don’t forget to use only manufacturer approved wax and buff the wax afterwards to remove excess.
