How to Get Your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Whether you’re transporting people or goods, it’s always efficient to use a larger vehicle to do it. But with certain sizes of vehicle, like heavy duty trucks, a standard driver’s license won’t do—you’ll need a CDL. We here at Fya Freightliner want to help you get past that obstacle with as little fuss as possible, so we’ve put together a few tips below on how to get your commercial driver’s license. To learn more, or to see the commercial trucks we have for sale, contact our stores throughout Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, today!
Requirements
First, the requirements you need to qualify for this process will vary depending on what state you’re getting your license in, so check out your state’s CDL testing manual. The Requirements section should list everything you’ll need to meet, such as:
- Minimum age
- Certain physical capabilities
- A number of years of driving experience
- A good driving record
Permit
Like your regular driver’s license, your first step to getting a CDL will be to try for a Class A CDL permit. You’ll need to pass a few written exams, then they’ll check to make sure you meet the various requirements for the state you’re in. Once you pass that, you’re a big step closer to a full CDL.
Most states have a few of the same written tests, including a General Knowledge test, an Air Brakes test, and a Combination Vehicles test.
Training
When you get your permit, you’ll need to start driving with a qualified CDL holder. You’ll need to have had your permit for at least 14 days before you’re eligible to apply for the full license, so use that time wisely and practice with your qualified driver. Some states also require a certain number of hours of driving experience before you can get the full license.
If you want some bonus help, try a CDL training program to help you brush up on the knowledge you need to pass written exams.
Endorsements
Depending on the type of vehicle you want to drive and the cargo you want to carry, you’ll need some specific endorsements on your card. There will be an endorsement test base on what you’re aiming for, but some also require a background check before they can be finalized on your license.
Skills Test
Finally, you’ll take a three-part driving test at either a state CDL testing site or a state-approved third-party site. It will include a pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and a typical driving test, and you’ll be using the type of vehicle you’re trying to get a license to drive. If you fail, you’ll have to wait a certain amount of time to try again, though the exact time varies by state. Use that time to brush up on what you missed!
